Romanian president announces resignation

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced during a press conference that he will resign on February 12 so that parliament does not have to impeach him.

“In a few days, parliament will vote for my dismissal, and a crisis will arise in Romania, because in order to save Romania from this crisis, I will leave my post on February 12,” he said.

According to Iohannis, no one will benefit from this decision, but the referendum will negatively affect domestic and foreign policy and lead to a division of society. Iohannis stressed that he does not want Romania to become “a laughing stock for the whole world.”

Iohannis’ presidential mandate ended on December 21, 2024. Since then, he has continued to serve until the election of a new leader. Against this backdrop, the Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR), Save Romania S.O.S, and the Young People's Party began to gather votes for the president's resignation. Parliament was scheduled to debate the issue on February 11.
