France's longest river, the Loire, has dried up significantly due to extreme heat and prolonged drought, turning into a sandy area in many areas.

Against the backdrop of a record heat wave in Western Europe, the drought in France is deepening.

Photographs released from Montjean-sur-Loire show that along several stretches of the 625-mile (about 1,000 km) Loire, the water has almost completely receded, leaving only isolated stagnant pools and a desert-like landscape.
