Tehran's metro network recorded more than 7 million trips between 5:30 p.m. Saturday (14:00 GMT) and 07:00 a.m. (03:30 GMT) Sunday, according to official data released by the Tasnim agency.
The increase in traffic has been timed to coincide with a mass religious event, a prayer in memory of the former supreme leader and his family members, which is being held at the Imam Khomeini Mosallah complex in Tehran.
As reported by Tasnim, the organizers had previously advised the participants to use the metro system to reach the venue of the gathering in order to reduce the burden on land transport and ensure the safe movement of a large number of people.
