NBC reports that at least 25 people have died in the United States, possibly due to extreme heat, including 22 in New Jersey.
On Sunday, ABC reported that the temperature in Washington, D.C., reached 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit (38.8 degrees Celsius) on Independence Day, breaking a record that had stood for more than 100 years.
"The record heat is believed to have caused 25 deaths (in regions) from the Deep South to the Midwest and East Coast," the report said.
Referring to New Jersey Department of Health spokesperson Dalla Awais, NBC reported that the number of heat-related deaths in the state rose from 19 to 22 on Saturday. In addition, one death was reported in Illinois, partially related to the heat, and two more in Mississippi.
