In the US capital, Washington, D.C., temperatures may rise to 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this week, the National Weather Service warns. Extreme heat waves are expected in the Washington area on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
"Dangerous heat is expected every day, with heat index values ranging between 110-113 degrees Fahrenheit (43-45 degrees Celsius)," the service said in a statement. High humidity is expected, which will increase the risk of heat stroke.
The meteorological service also urges people to be vigilant when traveling by public transport. temperatures inside closed vehicles can reach lethal levels within minutes.
