The Mesiatsev island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago has completely melted, reports the Russian Geographical Society. Researchers monitored the island from 2020 to 2022.
Now the island has completely melted. In 2015, the area of the island reached 53 hectares, and in August 2024, only three remained.
The island finally disappeared after a month. It is said that the reason for this was global warming. The disappearance of the island will require adjustments to the navigation maps, writes Levon Azizyan, director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring.
