Mesiatsev Island, the area of which was 53 hectares, has completely disappeared from the Franz-Josef Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. This is reported by the website of the Russian Geographical Society. According to the testimony of associate professor of the Moscow Aviation Institute Alexey Kucheiko, under whose leadership the corresponding observation was made, the missing area was located on the territory of Eva-Liv island. He stated that Mesyatsev Island "has completely melted".
Due to this, it will be necessary to make adjustments to the navigation maps, said Kucheiko.
It is noted that in August 2015, the area of Mesyatsevi Island was about 53 hectares. In August of this year, its size was already three hectares. A month later, the island finally disappeared.
Scientists attribute this to global warming, which is causing glaciers to melt and sea levels to rise. This causes erosion of the coastline, causing some landforms to disappear.
