The number of victims of floods in Spain has reached 158

As a result of heavy rains and floods in Spain, the number of victims has reached 158, reports 20minutos newspaper.

"The work of rescue services in the regions most affected by hurricane DANA is inevitably accompanied by tragedy. 158 people have already died as a result of the severe storm in the autonomous communities of Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia. The vast majority of them, 155 people, died in the province of Valencia," the publication's website says.

It is said that the authorities have decided to send to Valencia 500 more employees of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), which in recent years has become a powerful tool of the government to fight against forest fires, floods and all kinds of disasters. Previously, 1,200 servicemen of this unit were sent to the region.

The local Europa Press agency reported that electricity is gradually being restored in the province of Valencia. If on Wednesday 155 thousand houses were left without electricity, now only 40 thousand.

"A strong storm hit the city of Huelva at two in the morning, flooding most of the city," the Pais website said.

The Spanish government announced three days of official mourning for the victims of the rains and floods. The disaster has severely damaged road infrastructure in Valencia, the worst-hit region in eastern Spain, with more than 60 roads closed.
