Not just books. scientists have discovered the unexpected impact of libraries on life

Public libraries help people overcome loneliness, build social connections, acquire new skills and maintain well-being, research by researchers at the University of Glasgow and Stirling Council's library service has found. The authors concluded that the real influence of libraries on the life of the society is much wider than the traditional indicators - the number of visitors and the number of books issued - allow to evaluate.

The Evidencing the Social Value of Public Libraries project explored the social value of public libraries using the example of St. Ninians Library in Stirling, Scotland. The researchers combined statistical data with observations and interviews with library patrons and staff.

It has been found that libraries become trusted public spaces where people can socialize, learn, get practical help and participate in cultural life. Visitors described the library as a welcoming and accessible place that helps reduce social isolation, boost self-confidence and maintain connections with those around them.

"The true value of libraries cannot be measured in numbers alone," said lead author Catherine Champion, senior lecturer in creative industries and cultural policy at the University of Glasgow. According to him, libraries are an important part of social infrastructure. here people get information and support, build relationships and feel connected to their community.

As the research showed, library employees have a special role. Their help often takes the form of small, informal interactions, such as conversation, advice, support or referring people to other services and activities. Moreover, it is this kind of everyday work that often goes unnoticed in official statistics.

The figures for 2024-2025 reflect the volume of activity at St Ninians Library: it was visited more than 27 thousand times, the number of books given was almost 33 thousand. In addition, the library organized 440 events in which more than 4.4 thousand people participated. Visitors were also given access to digital resources and helped to complete everyday tasks online.

The researchers identified four main areas in which libraries create social value: social connections, cultural enrichment, economic support, and health and well-being. These effects are closely related to each other. Regular visits to the library, for example, can simultaneously allow a person to meet other people, learn a new skill, feel part of a community, and maintain a normal daily routine.

As a result of the project, the researchers developed a special Social Value Toolkit, a practical tool for libraries, which allows to evaluate their impact not only with quantitative indicators. It combines statistics, observations, interviews with visitors and staff, as well as professional assessments of library staff.

The authors of the study believe that this approach will allow managers and government bodies to better demonstrate the real contribution of libraries to the life of society. They emphasize that economic, cultural, social and welfare impacts rarely exist in isolation; they are formed simultaneously through the daily use of libraries and the interaction of people with their staff.
