The EU is coming to "help". but at whose and what expense? Political scientist Suren Surenyants wrote about this.
"The European Union has decided to send a new civilian mission to Armenia, presenting it as support in the fight against hybrid threats and as a means of increasing the resistance of state institutions. In the justification of the mission, a special place is given to the upcoming election cycle: parliamentary, local government elections and even a possible constitutional referendum. But what is more telling is that one of the goals of the mission is "to reduce and neutralize Russia's destabilizing actions".
This is a clear geopolitical positioning. When the external actor defines the source of the threat in advance, he actually moves his strategic opposition to the territory of the given country. Under these conditions, Armenia is turning into a platform for geopolitical competition. And here a fundamental question arises: is the goal of this mission to increase Armenia's resilience or to control its geopolitical direction? The internal political consequences of this mission cannot be ignored either. In recent years, the current government has consistently deepened cooperation with the West, including in the security sector.
The deployment of such a mission objectively strengthens that course, forming an external support and a source of additional legitimacy. The elections, which should reflect internal political competition, are beginning to be perceived as a geopolitical election between the West and Russia. In such conditions, the electoral process loses its independent value and turns into a platform for the collision of external influences. The EU mission, regardless of its declared goals, inevitably introduces foreign political opposition into Armenia's internal life, deepening polarization and increasing dependence on external actors. The problem is not the EU or Russia, but the subjectivity of Armenia.
When the country's security and electoral processes become a tool of competition for foreign forces, not only the political balance is threatened, but also the content of state sovereignty. Therefore, who does this mission actually "help" and what price will Armenia pay for it?" he wrote.
