Shots were fired during an event at the Washington Hilton Hotel, which was also attended by US President Donald Trump. The event was interrupted and everyone was asked to leave. According to the Associated Press, participants heard five to eight gunshots. CNN, citing a Secret Service agent, reported that security officers "stopped" the shooter.
According to Axios, the suspect was armed with a shotgun and attempted to breach security. The source told the media that he shot at the Secret Service officer, damaging his bulletproof vest.
The Secret Service clarified that the incident took place near the main security checkpoint and one person was arrested.
Trump later announced the shooter's arrest on his Truth Social social network page.
"The shooter was arrested. I advised to "let everything go its way", he wrote.
According to the correspondent of "New York Post", the man arrested for the shooting is Cole Thomas Allan, a 31-year-old resident of California. The Washington Post reports that he survived and was taken to the hospital.
