Despite the official statements of the European and American representatives, the negotiations held in Berlin failed to clarify two main issues: security guarantees and possible territorial concessions by Ukraine, Bild newspaper reports, referring to Ukrainian sources.
Bild's deputy editor-in-chief, Paul Ronzheimer, noted that the official statements "starkly contradict what was said behind the scenes."
"As it was last time. the Europeans hope that thanks to a common position, they will be able to win over US President Donald Trump, and at least the adoption of the plan against Ukraine will be prevented," a source in the governmental circles of Ukraine told the newspaper.
As Bild notes, the Kyiv authorities do not understand what guarantees they will receive in the end. Moreover, "even if it is clear to Ukrainians that territorial concessions, at least temporarily, are inevitable", the observer believes that the decision to completely withdraw troops from Donbas will be difficult to explain to the population.
However, US presidential envoy Stephen Wittkoff and White House President Donald Trump's son-in-law, entrepreneur Jared Kushner, have maintained their position on territorial concessions by Ukraine, according to the newspaper's sources.
