Protesters blocked Rustaveli Avenue again

Another anti-government protest action is taking place near the Parliament of Georgia in Tbilisi. Protesters blocked traffic on Rustaveli Avenue, where the parliament building is located.

The protestors' demand remains unchanged: to release previously detained activists and to call new parliamentary elections. They also express their solidarity with Mzia Amaglobeli, head of the local Batumelebi online news outlet, who was arrested during a demonstration in Batumi on January 12 and faces criminal charges for slapping a police officer.

Protests in Tbilisi began on November 28, when Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the country's authorities, in turn, are freezing the process of opening negotiations on joining the European Union.

The first week of the protest was the most intense, then the protests became peaceful, they take place every day near the parliament building and end around midnight, citizens voluntarily leave Rustaveli Avenue.
