A simple way to improve metabolism has been discovered

Scientists at the University of Turku (Finland) have found that even a small reduction in sitting time can significantly improve the body's ability to metabolize fats and carbohydrates for energy. The results of the study were published in the Nordic Journal of Sports Medicine and Science (SJMSS).

According to the scientists, this effect is related to the restoration of so-called metabolic flexibility, the ability of the organism to switch between different energy sources depending on the workload.

The study involved 64 people who had an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. All participants were initially sedentary. Over six months, the participants tried to sit less and stand more often, such as taking short walks, working while standing, or doing light stretching throughout the day.

According to the results of the experiment, those who reduced their sitting time by at least 30 minutes per day had improved metabolic rates. Their bodies are better at burning fat during light physical activity, such as walking or climbing stairs. The authors emphasize that the positive effect was especially noticeable in overweight individuals.

The study shows that improving metabolic health does not require a sudden transition to intense exercise. Even minimal reductions in sedentary time, such as answering phone calls while standing or taking a short walk after dinner, can be the first steps in preventing diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
