Russian Foreign Ministry. Expanding NATO military exercises with Japan only leads to escalation

NATO's plans to expand joint military exercises with Japan will only lead to new problems and the risk of escalation in the region. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko told journalists about this, answering TASS's question. "Such steps will bring nothing but problems and escalation, especially considering the complexity of the problems that remain unresolved in this region," said the high-ranking diplomat. He noted that the Russian side has a negative attitude to such actions, because "this is one of the steps aimed at closer involvement of the North Atlantic Alliance in the affairs of the region, which are far beyond the scope of NATO's geographical responsibility."

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced that the alliance is in favor of increasing the volume of joint military exercises with Tokyo against the background of security problems in Asia and Europe. According to him, it is about, among other issues, naval and air exercises, as well as joint exercises in the field of cyber security.
