US vetoes UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire, says it does not guarantee release of hostages

CNN - The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, saying it would not secure the release of the hostages.

"Throughout the negotiations, we have made it clear that we cannot support an unconditional cease-fire that does not lead to the release of hostages. Because, as this council has previously called for, a lasting end to the war must come with the release of hostages," Veto said on Wednesday. US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood announced after the application.
"These two urgent goals are inextricably linked. This resolution eliminates that need, and that is why the United States could not support it," Wood added. Seven US citizens remain in Gaza. “We will not forget them,” he said.

It then reiterates its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages." But U.S. officials said the wording was not tough enough because it did not make the cease-fire conditional on the release of the hostages. Wood insisted the resolution's authors refused to consider a compromise. the wording that could have led to its adoption, noting also that it contains "Hamas' responsibility for the October 7 terrorist attack There was no condemnation." Only the US voted against the resolution, using its right to veto one of the council's five permanent members. The other four permanent members voted in favor of the resolution, including the UK, which had earlier abstained from the US vote. to the other three rejected cease-fire resolutions. Before the vote, Israeli Ambassador Dani Danon declared that approving the resolution would be "treasonous".
