The court suspended the proceedings in the Trump case until December 2

The District of Columbia federal court has suspended all planned events until December 2 in the case of Donald Trump's alleged attempt to retain power in January 2021, despite his defeat in the US presidential elections, according to Judge Tani Chatken's decision.

He granted the previous petition of US special prosecutor Jack Smith. The latter asked the court to cancel all events and meetings planned within the preliminary investigation. Smith noted that "following the November 5 election, the defendant is expected to be confirmed as President-elect of the United States on January 6, 2025, and to be inaugurated on January 20, 2025."

The special prosecutor explained that the prosecution must "assess these unprecedented circumstances and determine the appropriate course of action."

Smith said his office would “submit a report or otherwise inform the court of the results of its deliberations on Dec. 2.” The defense did not object to this scenario.

In August 2023, Smith announced a four-count indictment against Trump. The maximum punishment for the most serious crimes against the Republican was 20 years in prison.

Earlier, NBC News, citing its sources, reported that the US Department of Justice is considering the possibility of ending the investigation into two federal criminal cases against Trump before he takes office.
