Gustavo Petro has left the post of President of Colombia

On the last day of his term, the outgoing president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated that his government acted in the interests of the people and the country and emphasized that he fulfilled his previous promise to respect the results of the elections. "Here we did everything for the people. For a nation that is nothing but the sky, the earth, the sea and, above all, the people, the Colombian people. I hope they will remember us.

Goodbye, freedom and life," Petro announced during the military honor ceremony held in the presidential palace of Casa de Nariño. Gustavo Petro, who became Colombia's first left-wing president in 2022, completed a four-year term during which he implemented sweeping social and economic reforms.

Among the most significant achievements of his administration are the adoption of labor reforms and pension reforms, the final outcome of which has yet to be decided by the Constitutional Court. Meanwhile, health care reform, one of the government's key projects, has yet to receive final parliamentary approval.

Petro's tenure was also marked by the deterioration of the security situation in several regions of the country and difficulties in advancing some of the government's initiatives in Congress.
