Regional trade “diversification” and the real picture: “Past”

The Past newspaper writes: For any country, economic diversification is important in order not to depend on one country and one direction. The Armenian authorities also periodically talk about diversification, but are increasingly recording the opposite result.

In general, foreign policy orientations and approaches of any country largely depend on foreign trade turnover, economic relations with other countries and a number of other similar factors. For example, trade turnover between neighboring Georgia and Russia in January-September 2024 increased, amounting to 1 billion 313 million US dollars. In particular, wine exports from Georgia to Russia increased by 14 percent, reaching a record $146.9. Moreover, Russia accounts for 68.5% of Georgian wine exports. For comparison, we note that Poland is in second place - only 5.2 percent, Ukraine is in third - 4.1 percent, Kazakhstan is in fourth - 3.8 percent, and China is in fifth - 3.1 percent. In addition to wine, Georgia immediately increased the export of strong alcoholic beverages to Russia by 2.7 times:

The lion's share falls on cognac (107 million), followed by whiskey (2.6 million) and vodka (442 thousand). Export volumes of mineral and carbonated drinks to Russia increased by 25.7% and reached $61 million. But the export of so-called “lemonade” to Russia increased by 2.8%. To make the picture more complete, let’s also present a picture of Armenia’s foreign trade turnover. The volume of our country's foreign trade with EU countries has decreased significantly, falling by about 24 percentage points. Instead, trade volumes with the Russian Federation increased 3.6 times.

According to statistical data, Armenia’s trade turnover with the EAEU countries already in 2024, which has not yet ended, exceeds the volume of Armenia-EU trade by 6.8 times. Details in today’s issue of the daily newspaper “Past”
