The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced the violation of the principles of the United Nations due to the decision on Cyprus

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey stated that the decision of the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus without the consent of the Turkish side of Cyprus contradicts the established practice and fundamental principles of the UN. Ankara calls to create a legal basis for the settlement of the situation as soon as possible.

The statement mentions that the mandate of the UN peacekeeping forces in Cyprus was extended for another year by UN Security Council Resolution No. 2815 of January 30, 2026.

"Extending the mandate of the UN peacekeeping forces without the consent of the Turkish Cypriot side, which is one of the two sovereign and equal peoples of the island, contradicts the established practice and principles of the UN," the document says.

The Turkish side emphasized that the peacekeeping forces in the north of the island can continue their activities exclusively due to the friendly approach of the authorities of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and noted that it is necessary to create a legal basis for their further presence as soon as possible.
