The number of Britons living in extreme poverty has reached record levels

In 2024, the number of citizens in extreme poverty in Britain has reached almost 7 million, compared to the last 30 years. This is stated in the report of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The fund sets the threshold of extreme poverty at the level of 40% of the poverty threshold.

According to the report, the average income of a family living in extreme poverty is 59% below the poverty line. For a family with two children, this figure is £16,400 a year.

“In 2023/24, 6.8 million people, or almost half of those living below the poverty line, were living in extreme poverty with incomes well below the poverty line. This is not only the highest total number, but also the highest share (of people in extreme poverty relative to the total number of poor) in the entire history of observations since 1994/95,” the report states.
