Russia insists that the kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was taken to the United States, should be released. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated this in an interview with TASS.

"The first step, without which everything else remains purely hypothetical, is the release of Maduro and his wife," the deputy minister said when asked if Russia would be willing to grant asylum to Maduro if he were released. "But since this [kidnapping of the president of a sovereign state] has already happened, it is necessary to insist that the president of Venezuela be released."

"And what will be the future disposition is a separate question. And at the moment there is simply no reason to talk about it," added Ryabkov.

On January 5, Maduro shouted that he was a prisoner of war as he left the federal courthouse. Ryabkov declined to comment on whether Russia agrees with Maduro.
