Bloomberg: Trump wants to force tech businesses to invest $15 billion in power plant construction

The administration of US President Donald Trump and the governors of a number of states in the north-east of the country are proposing to compel large technology companies to invest in the construction of new power plants. Bloomberg reports that, noting that it is about 15 billion dollars.

The goal of the initiative is to overcome the lack of electricity in the conditions of the growth of energy-intensive data centers, as well as to prevent a possible increase in tariffs for the population. According to Trump, the costs of the artificial intelligence and data center boom should be borne by data centers themselves, not American households. "I don't want Americans to pay more for electricity because of data centers," the president emphasized.

According to Bloomberg, the authorities plan to instruct the network operator PJM Interconnection LLC to conduct a special auction, within the framework of which the technology giants can participate in the construction of gas and nuclear power plants under contracts of up to 15 years. Earlier, Reuters reported that US electricity prices are already on the rise, reaching a record high in the fall of 2025, and the rapid growth of data centers continues to increase energy demand, putting additional pressure on the public's utility bills.
