Greenland has called on the US to stop its "disrespectful treatment" of the island

The leaders of five Greenlandic parties issued a joint statement regarding US President Donald Trump's calls for annexation of the island.

In a document published on the government's website, Jens Frederik Nielsen (Democrats), Pelle Broberg (Lighthouse), Mute Egede (People's Community), Aleka Hammond (Forward) and Akala Erimiasen (Solidarity) call on the US to end its "neglect" of the island.

"We don't want to be Americans, we don't want to be Danes, we want to be Greenlanders," the statement said.

"As the leaders of the Greenlandic parties, we would like to reaffirm our desire for the United States' contempt for our land to end."

They add that Greenland is a democratic country that wants to continue cooperation with both the United States and Western countries.
