Burkina Faso has announced that it has prevented an assassination attempt against the president

Burkina Faso's security services prevented a plot to assassinate high-ranking officials, including President Ibrahim Traore, Burkina Faso's security minister Mahamadou Sana said.
"Burkina Faso has again thwarted destabilization attempts. The action to destabilize the country was scheduled for January 3, 2026, at 11:00 p.m.

"It should have taken place in a series of targeted killings of civilians and military personnel, starting with the neutralization of the head of state, the president of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traore," the minister said on RTB TV and Radio.

According to him, the attackers planned to kill Traore either from close range or by blowing up his house. After that, the conspirators intended to disable the drone base and conduct a ground operation with the participation of foreign forces.
