After fuel subsidies were cut, prices in Bolivia doubled and protests erupted in La Paz. The demonstrators held marches, during which riots were registered, and the negotiations with the authorities reached a dead end, Euronews reports.
"The protest is against the decree signed by President Rodrigo Paz in December, ending long-standing subsidies for gasoline and diesel fuel. As a result, inflation has doubled, driving up transport and food prices.
Bolivia is experiencing its worst economic crisis in decades, and foreign currency reserves for imported fuel have been depleted.” When the protesters reached the city center, police blocked the entrance to the main square using tear gas.
Authorities said 12 people had been arrested, some of whom were charged with possession of explosives.
