Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, answering questions from a judge at his first hearing in New York, said he had not seen the indictment before appearing in court and was not aware of his rights, the New York Times reported on Monday.

According to the newspaper, this may indicate that Maduro and his lawyer had little time to discuss the case before the hearing.

Maduro also announced that he remains the president of Venezuela.

"I continue to be the president of my country," he said.
