A high-ranking official of Washington, Donald Trump, stated that the United States needs Greenland for reasons of national security.
"We need Greenland from a national security perspective," Trump told reporters on his plane en route from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Washington, D.C., where he was spending Christmas and New Year's at his Mar-a-Lago estate. According to the head of the White House, this is a strategic issue.
"There are Russian and Chinese ships in Greenland," Trump claimed, adding that Denmark "can't make Greenland safer."
Trump avoided answering a question about what pretext the US hopes to use to take control of Greenland.
"I'll just say that we need Greenland for national security reasons, and the European Union needs it, and they know it," he said.
Earlier, on January 4, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland is part of the kingdom and called on the United States to stop the threats, stressing that there is no point in Washington taking control of the island.
