Meta will shut down Messenger's separate desktop apps for Windows and Mac on December 15, TechCrunch reports.
"If you're using the Messenger desktop apps, you'll receive an in-app notification when the termination process begins," Messenger's help page says. You will have 60 days to use the Mac Messenger app before it is completely discontinued. After 60 days, you will be blocked from using the Mac Messenger app. We recommend deleting the app as it will no longer be usable,” TechCrunch reported.
Meta's plan to stop these desktop apps was first spotted by Appleinsider.
The company is now notifying users of the upcoming change to give them time to explore other options. For example, Windows users can use the Facebook desktop app, and both Windows and Mac users can access Messenger online.
The move comes a year after Meta replaced the original Messenger app with the Progressive Web app in September 2024. Of course, Meta's decision to stop making desktop apps altogether is likely to receive some backlash from active app users.
