Scientists have explained whether gardeners must trust the lunar calendar

Yandex.wordstat has more than one million inquiries with the lunar calendar in the last month. These tables, which show the "right" days of planting, watering and removing weed, are published in magazines, are issued as separate brochures and are published on the Internet. The specialists of the Perm Polytechnic University explained which tips can really help gardeners, which are based only on signs. The press service of the educational institution informed Gazeta.ru about this.

According to scientists, the gravity of the moon really affects the level of groundwater, like oceanic tides, but much weaker. Variations in fragile lands can reach a maximum of one and a half meters, while the tides in Atlantic reaches up to 18 meters. At the same time, such changes can only have an indirect impact on plants.

"Some species really sync their flourishing with the moon phases. For example, the rocky poleus and the Edechatra flourish during the full moon when dusting, bats and moths are active. And the algae, on the other hand, remove spores during the new moon when darkness protects them from ultraviolet radiation. However, most of the horticultural crops have no such dependence, "said Evgenia Gladkikh, Assistant at the Chair of Chemistry and Biotechnology of PNPU.

According to him, the claims that plants in certain lunar stages are better absorbed by fertilizers or that weeds can be "permanently removed from the moon" have no scientific evidence. The light of the moon cannot also support photosynthesis, its intensity is too low.

Experts clarify that the yields mainly affect the state, temperature, moisture, the amount of sunlight and the quality of the seeds. Therefore, according to scientists, the calendar can be used as a convenient reminder to plan horticultural work, but should not be relied only on it.

Instead, experts recommend gathering late apple varieties and root crops in September. At the same time, nitrogen fertilizers should not be applied in the fall, as they promote the growth of green mass instead of preparing for winter.
