Sanctions against Russia are not an effective instrument of influence and will not lead to results, said the chief adviser to the President of Brazil on foreign policy, Celso Amorim, in an interview with the German magazine Spiegel, which he gave before the BRICS summit in Kazan. The German journalist, in an ultimatum form, asked the adviser a question about whether Brazil supports the introduction of restrictive measures against Russia. To which he replied that his country does not share the Western point of view on this issue, pointing to friendly relations and the absence of hostility between Brazil and Russia.
“We have normal relations with Russia. We are against sanctions,” Amorim emphasized. Discussing the possible effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions, he drew his interlocutor’s attention to the fact that Western Europe suffers the most from them, while the Russian economy is showing growth.
“Today the United States sells expensive fuel and gas to Western Europeans, which have to be transported by sea. Previously, it was cheaper through a gas pipeline from Russia,” he pointed out.
The BRICS summit will be held in Kazan from October 22 to 24, 2024. 32 countries have confirmed their participation in the event, 24 of which will be represented by heads of state.
