Scientists explain why teenagers don't answer phone calls

Digital communications have found out why modern teenagers are less likely to respond to sound calls, preferring messages. It turns out that this is not only an age whim, but a new norm of digital communication, which reflects the change of social habits and emotional strategies. This was reported by The Conversation.

Despite the constant existence of smartphones in the hands of adolescents, voice calls are no longer the main means of communication. They are perceived as inconvenient and intrusive. Live conversation requires immediate feedback, while the messages allow you to control the content, response time and level of involvement.

The authors of the study say teenagers seek to manage their time, emotions and access levels. Refusal to answer the call is more likely to be seen as a means of protecting personal boundaries and to reduce stress in the context of a permanent digital accessibility.

Experts emphasize that silence or delay in response is no longer regardless of rude. On the contrary, they become part of a new "digital politeness", where the agreement, expectation and respect for someone else's territory.

According to them, the refusal of adolescents to respond to calls does not reflect the loss of social skills, the formation of other communication culture, more conscious and emotionally focused.
