US President Joe Biden has commuted the sentences of about 2,500 people convicted of drug-related crimes. This was stated in his statement released by the press service of the White House.
"Today, I am commuting the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of nonviolent drug offenses who are serving disproportionately long sentences compared to what they would be sentenced to under today's laws, policies and practices," the text reads.
Thus, Biden became the head of state who issued the most pardons and commutation orders in US history.
On December 1 of last year, the US president announced that he pardoned his son. The pardon covers the period from January 1, 2014 to December 1, 2024 and two trials in Delaware and California.
