Assad's army officers fled to Libya

The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the soldiers of Assad's army left Syria in two "groups". It is believed that Russia may be involved, but this has not been confirmed. The withdrawal comes amid the fall of the Assad regime, possibly due to fear of reprisals from the rebels.

According to the observation group, two planes carrying Assad army officers took off from Syria's Khmeimim airport to eastern Libya. The flights were carried out on different days: the first plane landed on December 8, the second on December 13.

Only high-ranking officers of Assad's army have escaped to Libya.
