Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle has been shot and killed outside his clothing shop in Los Angeles, the city's mayor has said.

Police said three men were shot on Sunday at around 3.20pm outside Marathon Clothing in south Los Angeles.

They were taken to hospital where one of them was declared dead and the others remain in a stable condition, police said.

The gunman fled and no arrests have been made, police said.

Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed Hussle's death, saying the city is "hurt deeply each time a young life is lost to senseless gun violence".

He tweeted: "Our hearts are with the loved ones of Nipsey Hussle and everyone touched by this awful tragedy."

According to the Los Angeles Times, citing law enforcement sources, Hussle was shot multiple times.

Shortly before his death, a tweet was posted on Hussle's official account that read: "Having strong enemies is a blessing."

Hussle, whose real name was Ermias Davidson Asghedom, had been a figure in the West Coast hip-hop scene for more than a decade.

He released a number of mixtapes before his debut album, Victory Lap, in February, which earned him a best rap album nomination at the Grammys.

Reports of his death were met with disbelief among fellow artists, who paid tribute to the musician on social media.

Rihanna said her "spirit is shaken by this".

She tweeted: "Dear God may His spirit Rest In Peace and May You grant divine comfort to all his loved ones! I'm so sorry this happened to you @nipseyhussle".

Pharrell Williams wrote on Twitter that Hussle was a "positive" force who "inspired millions."

Drake said he and Hussle had talked about recording a song later in the year.

"You were having the best run and I was so happy watching from distance," Drake wrote in a message on Instagram.
