Американские войска, входящие в Европейское командование Вооруженных сил США, развернули в Израиле комплекс противоракетной обороны (ПРО) THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense).

Целью размещения заявлено «обучение способности быстро развертывать сложные системы по всему миру при одновременном укреплении потенциала и возможностей с системами противовоздушной обороны ВВС Израиля».

Издание The Drive отмечает, что развертывание THAAD в Израиле вызвано усиливающейся ракетной угрозой со стороны Ирана.

В феврале сообщалось, что израильский истребитель пятого поколения F-35I Adir мог уничтожить сирийский радар JY-27.

Подвижный комплекс ПРО наземного базирования THAAD предназначен для высотного заатмосферного перехвата ракет средней дальности. Поражение цели осуществляется путем кинетического перехвата. Головным разработчиком THAAD выступает американская военно-промышленная компания. Система серийно выпускается с 2008 года.
