US President Donald Trump has reached a strategic impasse in the conflict with Iran and, instead of further escalation, should return to the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed with Tehran. This was reported in the editorial of the Indian newspaper The Hindu.
"If war resumes, it will be bad news for the entire Middle East region and the entire world economy. "Mr. Trump is at a strategic impasse, and instead of escalating the situation, he should follow the road map to get out of the crisis, the memorandum of understanding with Iran," the newspaper noted. According to the newspaper, "Trump, sensing a strategic defeat, is trying to increase economic and military pressure on Tehran to change its position on the Strait of Hormuz."
"He may continue the airstrikes, but his years of pressure and 40 days of bombing have done little to change Iran's negotiating position," emphasized The Hindu. As the newspaper notes, the complete lack of trust between the two sides is an obstacle to the peace process.
"Trump's public insults and insults to the leadership of Iran, as well as exaggerated threats disconnected from reality, do not help the cause. Both sides need to address the trust deficit, resolve their differences and start serious negotiations for a final settlement,” The Hindu concluded.
