Russian law enforcement agencies arrested the suspect in the assassination attempt against Vladimir Alekseev, the first deputy head of the General Intelligence Department, and his alleged accomplice, Russian mass media reported on February 7.
The suspect has already been taken for questioning, and on February 8, a court hearing on the issue of preliminary detention is expected, "Kommersant" reports. A criminal case has been opened on charges of attempted murder and illegal arms trafficking.
After interrogation, the suspects will be charged, the newspaper reports. Russia has not officially informed about the suspect's arrest. There is no information yet on his identity or the alleged perpetrators of the attack.
Alekseev's operation was successful, he regained consciousness.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident happened near the general's apartment.
In the summer of 2023, Alekseev participated in the negotiations with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the private military group "Wagner", when he, going against the administration, drove the tanks to Moscow. According to the Russian media, Alekseev was one of the main coordinators of the "Russian volunteer groups" fighting in Ukraine. In 2017, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
