A new life form has been discovered in Chernobyl

Scientists have discovered an unusual fungus, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, in the isolated zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, reports ScienceAlert. Not only is it able to survive in extreme conditions, it also seems to use radiation for its growth.

In the late 1990s, researchers first discovered a fungal colony in the destroyed reactor. Most of the mushrooms were dark due to their high melanin content. Cladosporium sphaerospermum species was particularly noteworthy, exhibiting the highest levels of radiation resistance.

US scientists subjected the mushroom to ionizing radiation. It has not only survived, but accelerated its growth. This change in melanin may indicate its ability to use radiation as a source of food or energy, reports News.ru.
