Scientists have explained why parents are more severely unemployed with sons than with daughters

Scientists from the Perm Polytechnic University found that parents react more strongly to their sons' passivity, because they consider it a threat to the family's well-being and their own status. Daughters' inactivity is less annoying. they are more often perceived as seekers, which reduces anxiety. Perm National Research Polytechnic University reported this.

The scientists explained that in modern society, the term "NEET" or "non-no" is increasingly used to describe young people between the ages of 16 and 24, and less often those under 29 or even 34. Unlike the unemployed, they do not seek work, but simply "go with the flow". Often, NEETs live on the incomes of loved ones who unwittingly encourage this attitude.

Research shows that the number of such people in Generation Z and older has increased significantly; their willingness to give up active professional activity is higher than that of their predecessors.

According to Olga Yuryeva, docent of the Department of Sociology and Political Science of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University, the son's passivity is perceived by his relatives as a crisis of masculinity. He notes that young men often hide in virtual environments, video games and TV series, becoming "invisible" to the demands of the outside world. On the other hand, young women often disguise their inactivity as "finding themselves", waiting for the right moment or the beginning of a creative career.

The researchers emphasized that parents tend to have stricter expectations of their sons. they expect them to start their career early and be the "breadwinner". Young women are more prone to emotional tenderness. if they maintain their physical attractiveness and do not show obvious signs of crisis, problems may go unnoticed.

In families with traditional values, strong pressure on sons also has an economic component. they believe that the son should be a support system in old age and that his inactivity is a threat to their parents' financial stability.

According to the researchers, the key to change lies in supporting professional self-determination and creating an environment where work is seen not only as a duty but also as an opportunity for growth. Parents are encouraged to help their sons and daughters find purpose and participate in volunteer, educational, or professional projects.

"Inconspicuous acquaintances with motivated friends often also serve as a catalyst for revising one's own values," suggests Maria Duvanskaya, Ph.D., associate professor of the Department of Sociology and Political Science at Perm National Research Polytechnic University.
