A way to predict mental disorders in children

Scientists from the University of Vataparo have found that the activity of the immune system is related to the risk of emotional and behavioral disorders in children living with chronic diseases. The work was published in the "BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR" magazine.

The study is based on the Long-Life Life Project Data, which follows asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, arthritis and other chronic diseases. The sample included 128 children aged 2-16, who provided blood samples and had psychological tests for 4 years.

Scientists have analyzed the level of inflammation biomarks and compare them to the emotional state of the participants.

It turned out that the high level of G-CSF is associated with an increase in anxiety and emotional suffering. At the same time, the GM-CSF has a predictive factor for many problems, from aggression to a common increase in symptoms. In contrast, IL-6 unexpectedly provided a protective effect. Children with higher levels of this protein had less likely to have behavioral difficulties.

The authors note that this is the first data that the immune system can "hint" about children with chronic diseases about the risk of mental disorders. If the results are confirmed in more large-scale studies, such markers tests can help doctors identify risk groups in advance and send children to psychological assistance.

The team plans to continue the monitoring of children and explore how immune factors interact with social conditions.

"If we can confirm that inflammatory markers really predict the risk, it will allow us to send children to professionals and reduce the time of receiving help."
