The famous French-Armenian composer Karpis Aprikyan passed away

The Armenian Embassy in France was deeply saddened to learn about the death of the famous French-Armenian composer, musicologist, founder and longtime leader of the "Sipan-Komitas" Choir, Karpis Aprikyan. This was reported by the RA Embassy in France.


The role of the famous composer in spreading Armenian culture in France and beyond its borders is invaluable. With the "Sipan-Komitas" choir he founded, Karpis Aprikyan has presented Armenian song and music in different countries of the world for more than 50 years. The oratorio "Birth of David of Sassoon" completed by him, based on Barsegh Kanachian's sketches, deserves a special mention.


We express our sincere condolences to the family of Karpis Aprikyan, his relatives and many students. Karpis Aprikyan's spirit and original art will continue to live in his works.


Acquaintance: Karpis Aprikyan was born in 1926 in Alexandria, Egypt. In 1948 there he founded the "Hamazkayin" choir, with which he performed many concerts in Egypt. In 1953 moved to Paris, and soon after he founded and began directing the "Sipan-Komitas" choir, performing with great success on many prestigious international stages.


In 2009, Karpis Aprikyan was awarded for his great contribution to the spread of the Armenian drought, exceptional achievements in the fields of Armenian culture, art and education. received the Armenian state award, the "Movses Khorenatsi" medal, and in 2021, he was awarded the "Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" state order by the French Ministry of Culture. 2024 On September 29, Karpis Aprikyan was awarded by the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, with the highest award of the city of Paris, the Grand Medal of Paris (Médaille Grand Vermeil de Paris).
