A means of reducing the risk of dangerous consequences of stroke

Scientists from the Karolinskay Institute have discovered a new mechanism that can significantly improve the treatment of ischemic stroke. They found that the PDGF-CC growth factor and his PDGFRα receptor interaction preventing the occurrence of scars after this dangerous event. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI).

Ischemic stroke, during which brain blood flow is blocked, affects about 12 million people around the world every year. However, many cases end with death and irreversible brain.

The purpose of the new research was to find mechanisms that help quickly recover after the vascular injury of the brain. That's why scientists have conducted experience on mice. First of all, rodents have archaically stroke. The scientists then targeted PDGF-CC enzyme. It is important to promote the growth of blood vessels, protect nervous cells and transmit signals between them.

"Our studies have shown that PDGF-CC and its PDGFRα receptor are involved in the formation of spicy tissue in the brain after ischemic stroke. "Blocking these molecules has partially prevented the changes in tissue," said the first author of the research and a researcher at the Department of Medical Biochemics and Biophysics.

The results also showed that the braking of these molecules not only reduces scars, but also normalizes the behavior of mice, even when treatment began 24 hours after the stroke.

Currently, the main method of stroke is thrombolitic therapy aimed at restoring blood flow by dissolving the thrombus. However, this method is effective only within the first 4.5 hours after the start of stroke, which limits its application in cases when the patient turns to the doctor. Scientists have said that their discovery may be a basis for new treatment strategies for the recent stage of ischemic stroke.
