India reports first case of mpox in the country

A suspected case of mpox has been reported in India in a man who recently returned from an outbreak-affected country, the health ministry of India announced Sunday. It added that this patient has been isolated in the hospital and is being treated.But India's health ministry did not specify what strain of mpox was detected in this patient, but said tests were being conducted to confirm the infection.Mpox can be spread by close contact. It is usually mild, but it can be fatal in rare cases. It causes flu-like symptoms and pus-like lesions on the body.Last month, the Hindu Daily reported that India was on high alert because a new strain of mpox had emerged in Africa.The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the new variant a public health emergency of international concern.Between 2022 and March 2024, a total of 30 cases of the older mpox were reported in India.
