Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum expressed confidence that a trade war between Mexico and the United States will be avoided after the arrival of the newly elected US president Donald Trump in the White House.
"There will not be a potential customs war between Mexico and the United States," Sheinbaum said during the daily press conference.
Trump previously wrote on the Truth Social social network that he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada due to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Mexican authorities responded by saying that they would respond in a mirror manner and that the consequences of a trade war would be negative for the US economy.
Scheinbaum also added that a planned renegotiation of the Canada-Mexico-US Trade Agreement (USMCA) will take place in 2026.
