Al-Sharaa. Syria and Russia continue to discuss the fate of military bases

The interim president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced that after the change of power in Damascus in December 2024, a new chapter has opened in the relations with Russia.

"Our countries have historical relations. we have great common interests. We are currently working on guidance and returning the situation to a normal state," the politician said in an interview on July 26 with Qatar's Al Jazeera TV channel.

Answering the TV channel's question, the head of the Arab Republic emphasized that "discussions with Russia regarding the future of its military bases in Syria are not over yet." On March 31, during a speech at the "Chatham House" discussion club, al-Sharaa announced that "plans are being developed to gradually turn Russian bases into training centers for the Syrian army."
