Merkel believes that cutting economic ties with China will not help

The former Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, expressed the opinion that it is "extremely important for the EU to develop a unified position towards China".

"European interests do not always coincide with American interests," he told Le Point magazine.

"Now that America and China are moving away from each other, Europe is under pressure.

The European Union must be able to find its own way in dealing with China that suits its interests. I really hope so, because a break in relations between China and the European economy will not lead to anything good."

Merkel, who left the political arena a few years ago and headed the German government for 16 years, wrote the memoir "Freedom".

In it, he talks about his perception of the leaders of leading countries, including the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
