The Venezuelan authorities have declared a state of emergency after the earthquake, Reuters reports, referring to the presidential ambassador, Delsey Rodríguez. Rodriguez, quoted by the agency, also announced the closure of Caracas' Mayketia International Airport due to damage.
A devastating earthquake occurred in Venezuela on Wednesday. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude of 7.5, down from an initial 7.1. The USGS noted that two earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 were recorded within a minute of each other.
Their epicenters were located 10 kilometers apart in the Venezuelan state of Yaracuy. The service estimates that a large number of victims and destruction is likely.
