Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has decided to resign as a member of the House of Commons, The Guardian reported.
After his departure, a snap election will be held in the Holborn and St. Pancras constituency in north London.
After resigning from the post of Prime Minister in late July, Starmer announced that he intended to remain an MP until the next parliamentary election. However, as the newspaper wrote, he has reconsidered this decision and is now ready to “pass the baton” to his successor.
Starmer announced that after leaving Downing Street, he has reconsidered his future plans and intends to focus on international issues, including defense, security, trade and technology.
In addition, he will continue his work to combat violence against women and girls - an issue Starmer was engaged in even before being elected to parliament.
Starmer retained his seat in Holborn and St Pancras by 11,572 votes in the last election. There had been earlier concerns that Labour might lose the seat to the Greens in a by-election, but in recent weeks Labour's position in national polls has improved, while the Greens' support has fallen.
