Why? After all, Trump and Hegsett declare that they have defeated Iran. What else do you need 5000 marines for? Or do they consider that they have weakened Iran's resistance enough and can even think about landing an amphibious assault?
It's hard to say. It is possible that Trump is trying to put psychological pressure on Iran in this way, so that Tehran will reduce its negotiation benchmarks and agree to accept "defeat" and give Trump an opportunity to get out of the war.
But, Iran does not seem intent on repeating the history of the 12-day war in 2025. At that time, Tehran agreed to accept Trump's approach, declare that the nuclear program has been destroyed, and thus end the war. Now, perhaps, Iran considers that it made a mistake by accepting that approach. Now it seems that Tehran has no intention of giving Trump a way out of the situation and is setting tough conditions: the right to a full nuclear cycle, compensation for damages, and the cancellation of American military bases in the Middle East.
Moreover, I think that under compensation, Iran means formalizing its controlling position over the Strait of Hormuz, that is, charging money to pass through the strait.
